Upon Vestia: Chapter Twenty-One

Luka made a face. "gross. Computer, regular clothes please." She looked relieved as the gown disappeared and she was just in her usual cargo pants and vest. "Who should we go annoy then?"

Kay made a face. [I have absolutely no desire to add vet to my career list.] He smiled weakly. [How do you know how to do all of this? Home on Pandora?] He was curious, they didn't know much about Dawn to be fair.

"My nearest neighbors were ranchers" Dawn said then shrugged "When they watched me, I had to help them, so I picked up some things and the rest is more current reading" She said, showing them the tablet she had "Though we could find someone willing to be a rancher here I am sure."

Asher smiled softly. "Maybe we should ask that vavare boy, Fardhe, if he wants to join us. I'm sure he'd love to do some more farming," he joked. More seriously he added, "Yes, I'm sure there's someone on board who can help you. I'm not sure who exactly, but there are options. You could put up "help wanted" posters."

Dawn chuckled then shrugged and nodded "Yeah, either way sounds good, though with our crews as small as they are, we could just ask Vestia to ask them. This room is big enough even for the Vavare to travel in easily."

Kay shook his head, poor Fardhe.
[Matt might remember more than I do, he always preferred dealing with the animals more than the gardening and other everyday tasks. Though I expect a great deal of his mucking out stables or feeding the goats were just excuses to escape and slack off for a bit.] He rolled his eyes.

Dawn chuckled again then shrugged "Matt was already here, helping to put this place together for the animals."

"Maybe you'll be able to talk him into coming back to help more," Asher said.

Kay nodded. [He likes animals, it's weird. He used to talk to, or rather at the goats growing up. He'd get upset when we had to kill one because it had gotten too old and stopped giving milk, or we really desperately needed food. He kept naming them, and our mother would get extremely annoyed at his protests that we couldn't eat Sigrud or Hilda or whatever random comic heroine name he'd chosen.] He looked amused. Hey, a rare childhood memory that wasn't depressing. [Don't let him name the goats.] He nodded sagely.

Asher looked amused. "We can put up a sign in here that says 'naming goats is prohibited'."

Kay shook his head. [Telling him NOT to do things just makes him want to do it more. He's frustrating like that.]

"Hmm, that's true. We could try ordering Matt to name the goats," Asher said, amused. "Then again, he might catch on that we were using reverse psychology on him, and name them anyway."

Kay nodded. [He's so difficult.] He smiled affectionately though. Matt's annoying problem child nature was part of what made Matt Matt, Kay loved his brothers, even if they were annoying as all hell.
[We could give them all the same name, that'd throw him off.]

"Hmm yes, name them before he can," Asher smiled. "They can all be named... Daisy. Or something. I suppose Dawn should decide, as the goat owner."

Dawn was enjoying this, listening to them then shaking her head "Esk said a similar thing, so I figured, keeping the goats as 'mine' but letting him have one for himself would be a compromise."

[You're going to give him a goat?] now there was an image. Matt with a goat of his very own, oh dear...
[That.. might work.]

"Yeah, I may let him 'own' the male, since we can't kill him for food anyway" Dawn said and chuckled softly

"Well that's a peaceful solution to the problem," Asher said. "If he accepts the offer, of course."

Kay nodded. [We'll see. I'm sure you can ignore his whining anyway.]

Dawn nodded and chuckled softly "Yeah, probably. He was watching the kids last time, so we didn't bring that up then."

Kay nodded again. [Matt loves kids.] He frowned slightly, it still hadn't totally sunk in that Matt was going to be a father. It was just too weird.
He shook that thought from his head.
[How is your uncle taking his sudden promotion?] He asked, changing the subject.

Dawn shrugged at that question "Right now he's all 'check everything over, be ready, make sure we have stores not only food but supplies' mode. SD is smaller than the ship he used to have."

Kay nodded. [He has a bit of experience with this sort of thing though yes?] He got that impression anyway, Rigel seemed like a guy who was used to being in charge, or close to it.

Dawn nodded "Yeah, he ran his own ship and company for years before he gave it up and came home."

"It seems like all of you chose the best candidate possible," Asher said. "All his experience is sure to pay off."

Kay nodded in agreement. [Any idea what you'll do with yourselves if you do decide to leave? ] Honestly he wasn't sure he knew WHAT the SD had done previously. Couriers? Smugglers?

Dawn frowned a little then shrugged "Probably go back to salvaging, since that's what uncle knows best, though he may try what Acus was doing, transporting small stuff."

[Just stay safe, all of you.] Kay smiled softly, looking out over the fields at the grazing animals. It was sort of peaceful. [It needs trees] He mused, fields needed trees. Even if there was no real sun to shade from.
