Upon Vestia: Chapter Twenty-One

Luka made a face. "gross. Computer, regular clothes please." She looked relieved as the gown disappeared and she was just in her usual cargo pants and vest. "Who should we go annoy then?"

Asher didn't really know what to do or say. He watched his poor, sad little family and wondered if they were ever going to be together again after the dragons went through the portal. He managed to keep his expression not too miserable, it was probably a good thing the babies couldn't hear his mind though.

Kay petted Danika's head. He dearly wanted to reassure her it would all be okay, but could he really lie to her?
It's only temporary little one, think of it like a vacation. Yeah, he was going to try okay?
Thing was, once the family was dealt with, their most immediate threat would be gone. True, until Star dragons were free there would always be a threat to these kids, but compared to the Family? Slavers didn't seem that much of a threat.
At least when you shot a slaver they stayed dead.

"Vacation?" Danika raised her head to look up at Kay curiously. Hm, new word for her.

Asher smiled a bit. Kay must be trying to explain this more palatably to Danika, he guessed.

Kay nodded, hmm, how to explain that. Do you know holiday? It's when you go away for a while somewhere new and then you come home. You'll get to see where I was born. He forced a smile. I'm sure your uncle will be able to tell you many extremely embarrassing stories about me as a child too. yes, focus on the positives.

Danika sighed and snuggled against him again "Want you, Asher and mom too"

Kay nodded. I know little one, I know. He looked to Asher sadly.

Asher reached out and petted Danika's back a bit. "We'll try to come pick you up as soon as we can," he told her. It wasn't a lie, they would try. Who knew if they would succeed though. He looked from her to Vela and Kerr, "You're all very brave and very smart, you'll do just fine. And you can get to know your uncle Web a bit better. He's very nice."

Kay nodded. Shifting his weight a little so he could set his tablet beside him and write. [And how many times does anyone get a chance to go camping with a prophet/king?]

Danika looked to what Kay wrote, tilting her head a little then looking back to Asher and Kay again "Okay" She said softly, then nuzzled Kay again. She didn't want to leave him, but she would go because he said she had to.

Kay smiled weakly to Danika, letting her nuzzle him and petting her back. I'll miss you little one. That was the truth, he really would miss her. He'd become pretty dang attached to her in her short time on this world. That was parenthood though right?

"For now we're here," Asher said gently. "You won't be going anywhere until tomorrow, and we're staying right with you guys."

Danika nodded at that, looking up at both of them again "Good, we stay together today"

Kay nodded, sure, one big happy family. Well, one big neurotic terrified family. Close enough.
He looked to Starr and the other two babies.

Starr was still holding both the babies close, petting them though they seemed calm with the promise of having today together.

"Yes, we'll stay together for the rest of today," Asher said. Hey, it was the least they could do after breaking such bad news to the poor kids so suddenly. Family time. Real family time, not the kind that was preparing to attack the Guild. It would be good for them all.

Starr nodded and looked over to Kay and Asher "Yes, time just for us to be together, even if it is short, then you kids get to go camping for a bit and we will see you after." She wasn't going to entertain the thought of any of them dying and not being there after the war, not right then

Kay nodded, trying to remain as positive as possible if only for the kid's sake.
