Upon Vestia: Chapter Eleven

She blinked and nodded, "Yea...?"

Spaced? well that wasn't good. He hurried to intercept her.

Shane side hugged Ellie too, watching Starr leave then shrugging a little "I don't know. She must be working on something to be that worked up." He said uncertainly then looked up and smiled at the camera "Thanks Vestia"

Starr was headed for her shuttle again as she walked down the hallways.

Kay caught up with her along the way. Starr?

Starr stopped and looked to Kay "Oh, hi Kay" She said then turned to walk again "Come on, I may need you for this."

Kay frowned, and hurried to keep up with her. With what? Starr, what are you up to? He looked worried.

"A cure" Starr said and glanced to him "I think I just figured it out, but applying it is still a question."

Kay shook his head. How? He didn't look like he believed her, in fact, he looked really concerned for her.

Starr reached her shuttle and opened the door so they could go in. It looked very different inside at the moment, with all the desks down and covered with equipment or papers. It was obvious she had been at this for a while already. "It's a magic curse that only lets shapeshifters not fall victim. It needs a magic cure. The problem is not having any way of knowing the original curse. Most of the time when you know the original curse, you can deconstruct the spell and change it into the cure. As it stands, I have been 'flying blind' with only my own observations of you to go on. Anyway, I thought about this for a long time, and have been trying to piece together this puzzle. I think I may have found a way to free you."

Kay looked around at everything warily. Starr, this is extremely dangerous. If something goes wrong... Much as I would love to be well again He chewed his lip anxiously. What do you have so far? And how do you intend to test it?

Starr sighed at that then grabbed a notebook to write on before she forgot what she thought of. "The only way I have to test it is on you, since I don't have your blood. Unless you would let me have a little to run tests on?" She said, glancing to him then back to her notebook with a sigh "It's all theory at this time, but I should be able to make it work."

Kay looked nervous. This was all a little too much like being a lab rat. My blood is a biohazard, what would you do with it? Please don't say infect something, please...
Then again, the slavers already had a sample of his blood to do goodness knows what with. If they created a bio weapon, they'd need a cure.
Anxious and uncertain, he nodded. I trust you Starr, not to do anything insane. But please, handle any blood samples with extreme caution. I couldn't live with myself if I infected you.

A bot showed up with some salty broth, which Ellie took, patting the bot on one of its surfaces. "Starr's crazy. I like her, but I don't understand her."

Starr looked over to him again and smiled softly "No, I won't infect anything, including myself. I should be able to do this with just your blood and without harming anything else."

Kay relaxed a little. We'd have to go back to the medlab. He didn't really understand magic much, but he still wanted to know. What is your theory?

Starr stood up and set the notebook down "It's really simple in one way. We remove the curse that brings out the wolf. It is tied to the moon, but only when you are on a planet. That was one of the markers that let me figure it out. It is naturally blocked by the stars without planetary interference. Once you enter the atmosphere of a planet, then the curse is 'awake' but out here in space, it is rendered dormant. We can remove it in this dormant stage and clean your blood of any trace of the curse. It should work for anyone infected, if they are off planet."

Ellie shook her head. "Man, everyone is so old here. Do you ever feel, like, super young? But then they act super dumb too, and it's like, aren't you supposed to be mature compared to me? It's freaky."

Remove it how though? He asked, indicating she should follow him back to the medlab for this blood sample.

Shane chuckled and nodded "Yeah, I'm a baby compared to Starr, but then, we have to grow up faster, we don't have as long as they have to just be a kid and act up."

"With magic" Starr said as she turned to follow him, locking her shuttle up again as she did "Magic made it, so magic can end it. I cannot explain it in scientific terms for you. Magic is not science, it has no clear A to B lines, with magic, you have to let yourself believe in the impossible for it to become possible" She said then shook her head a little "I am not making sense I know."

Ellie nodded earnestly and took another swig of broth. "It's like high school around here, seriously. It's kind of awesome, there's so much gossip. And lots of old people love." She added, "Man, I would not want to be immortal though. Those guys sure have a sucky time."

Shane laughed softly and looked back to his meal to finish eating.

Vanessa's bell-like laughter chortled dryly as she entered the cafeteria, "Oh, Terran, you do not know the half of it. Some of us envy the thought of mortality. It seems to make things more... important, mortality."

Ellie jumped and looked up at Vanessa. "Umm." She said, "I guess you're getting an interesting view of this topic, aren't you?" she looked a bit sad.

Vanessa sighed, looking away. "Immortality... Is too much a burden. There is no beauty in it. While mortality and aging is like a flower, with the beauty of birth and the color of life, and the tranquil sleep of death, immortality is like stone, dull, unmoving, unchanging. In the end, we simply fade away from our former selves, but we have no way of death other than violence."

Shane frowned as he listened to Vanessa. That was a sad way to look at life.
