Upon Vestia: Chapter Five

"All right... right, we'd better get him to the med... the med bay," Asher said. "And... and do some tests to see what's needed."

"She's right. " Matt told Thaila. "You're better than she ever was. Now you can finally prove that, without her screwing it up."

Kay nodded. [It must feel strange. ] He frowned a little. [Do you think your creators ever realised what they'd done?] It was pretty clear to everyone on this ship that Asher was more than just a machine, but did that mean all androids were? And if they were people, were the programmers aware of this when they shackled them with the three laws?

"You aren't gonna let me think otherwise will you?"

Asher considered the question carefully. "They must have some idea, because they designed our code. And judging by how the Laws were designed to behave, they fully believed that some of us would try to do things we weren't built to do, and they wanted to prevent that."
He paused, "When we first boot up, we're basically blank slates, with no opinions. But we're designed to adapt to the situations we're placed in. The implications of all that are... unfortunate."

"Nope!" Matt declared. "Until you do something awful, i'm gonna assume you're a decent guy. Deal with it."

Kay nodded, chewing his lip thoughtfully. [I'm not sure unfortunate is the right word.] He shook his head and decided this was probably far too depressing conversation to be having this time of day.

Asher smiled. "Well, that's why I'm going to find a way to fix it."

Kay tilted his head. [Please tell me you're not about to turn freedom fighter on us. No offense, but you're far too good a person for that sort of work. ]

He chuckled, "Fine fine.."

"Of course not. There are other ways to set change in motion, ways that don't involve violence and anger," the android said. "The Terran Empire doesn't condone slavery, so it's a matter of convincing them we're alive, in much the same way that somebody once convinced me."

Kay smiled softly. [I'll do whatever you need to help. ] It was a noble cause.

Matt grinned and put an arm around him. "There ya go. Now come on, let's go get food! You can't sit here moping all day, it's not healthy."

He sighed and shook his head to stand, "Fine fine.... breakfast should still be served right?"

Matt shrugged. "I dunno. I usually just help myself to whatever's in the kitchen." He chuckled and lead the way to the dining hall.

"Surprise you haven't died of food poisoning."

Matt laughed. "Maybe i'm just super lucky."

"Well from now on your gonna eat properly, alright?" HE said with a weak smile.

Matt burst into laughter "Are you mothering me? I thought I was meant to be looking after you?"

He smirked, "No offense but certain flavors are turn offs in kisses."

Matt snorted "Says the guy who was the one puking. " They entered the dining room.

"Says the guy that likes being nibbled." He stuck his tongue out.

Matt grinned toothily. "Fine then Mr Chef, it's all yours." He gestured to the kitchen.

He got some cook meat and eggs, plus bread and fruit for himself.

Matt found somewhere for them both to sit and thanked Thaila for the food. "I take it you're feeling a bit better now?"

"Yea, burning stuff helped alot too." He chuckled.

Matt snickered "You sound like my brother. Not.. kay.. my twin brother. He always said it made him feel better. Sure you're not part fire elemental?"

He laughed, "My father could control fire so who knows."

"Ahh well, perhaps that's the explanation. Our dad could too... I ended up with water. And weirdly our sister can't do anything. I think she just... never embraced that half of herself honestly. She always wanted to fit in and not be a freak." He shrugged and ate. He had zero table manners.

"Mm, I suposely have magically ability as a keeper but I never tapped into it." He said with a shrug. "Trauma supposely halted my development in that aspect."
