Upon Vestia: Chapter Five

"All right... right, we'd better get him to the med... the med bay," Asher said. "And... and do some tests to see what's needed."

Shane waved and smiled at her "What did you think of the song earlier? Do you know what that was about?"

Starr nodded and fell silent, watching and listening now.

Matt shrugged. "Never risked it. My foster mother was never a particularly adventurous cook anyway.  Can't say i've ever really considered food as anything other than fuel."

"she rogue too?" mourn asked, surprised. "could crack from here, but take time... might set off fail safes" he shrugged and yanked a cable out of his own hair. It looked like he had a few of them tied up into the dreadlocks. He plugged one end into his own head and looked to the two. "Have code breaking software, quicker than computer." He plugged the other end into the computer. "Sure you want to do this?" He really hoped they'd say yes.

"I honestly don't know... know what she is," Asher said. "It's better to not risk getting her attention. And yes, if Starr... Starr still agrees, go ahead."

"Heny and Thalia?" Shane asked, he never would if thought those two would pair up.

Starr nodded and looked to Asher "If it will help you, then yes"

Mourn made a happy purring noise and pressed a few buttons on the computer. "Be patient... take time." He closed his eye, the light behind his optic flashed on and off rhythmically as numbers started to scroll across the computer screen. He started humming as he worked through the codes manually.

"You never know with Keepers," Ellie said sagely, "They're all a little bit nuts. Which is why they pair up."

Asher made himself hold still, even as every instinct told him to not let an unknown hacker this close to his mind. Mourn could do so much damage so easily! But he had to do this, or he would never be himself again.
A few minutes passed, then the screen would flash a new message,
> AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED
> ACCESSING UNIT MBT-MK7 #3754

Mourn giggled to himself, opened his eye and tapped away at some keys. "Let's look at your brain"

Shane shook his head then smiled "Do you know where the song originated?" He asked, getting back to the reason he had tracked her down in the first place.

Starr looked at the screen then to Asher. they were in now, no turning back.

"I think it came from one of those early Dreamworks movies--Titanic, maybe," Ellie said.

"If you could stay out of my thought process logs as much as possible, I'd appreciate that," Asher said, playing nervously with a piece of string from his pocket.

Mourn nodded and started searching for the 3 laws, and that pesky list that was causing all this cpu stalling. He could tell from these readings how overtaxed the androids brain was, and made tisk tisk noises at the inefficiency. He couldn't help but want to sneak a look at what made him tick though, the android's humanity was pretty astounding. Still, work first. He could read quickly thanks to his augmented brain, and still plugged into the computer, he gave up typing and just interfaced directly with it as he searched.

"Disney, the little mermaid" Shane said and chuckled

Star just watched quietly

In her wandering, Rey has passed by the Rec room where Mourn, Asher and Starr were all gathered around to mess with the robot's software. Her periwinkle eyes widened slightly and she quickly ran off again. The girl skipped back a few minutes later with Lilian right behind her. "Alright, Spider Girl, where are you takin--"

She paused for a moment as she walked in, staring at the cyborg hovering over the android. Immediately the human was right beside him and looked on with wide eyes, almost practically pushing him aside, "You're opening up the android-that's-not-really-an-android and you didn't invite me?! Who are you people?!"

Rey merely giggled in mischievous innocence and swayed on her feet, twisting her torso from side to side as her bright smile watched on from the side of the room.

Mourn seemed to be focusing on what he was doing, but when she appeared beside him and sorta shoved her way in her turned to look at her. He had a cable plugged into his head. "Laws giving him trouble, cpu over worked. " He indicated the screen readout. "Trying to find code."

"How do you know all this stuff? Are you a robot too?" Ellie asked, snorting with laughter.

The Laws would be easy enough to find; nearly every bit of the android's programming was set to test them before completing an action, and that could direct Mourn where to look. The problem was, of course, that they were designed very carefully to be resistant to modification. Most of Asher's code could be edited without difficulty, but normal attempts to edit the Laws would throw up an ERROR message upon execution.
"Oh hello," Asher said to the human, smiling, "Come to join in the fun?"

Mourn frowned and pondered the problem. Maybe he could write extra code to redirect the other programming to ignore this chunk, reroute so the laws would sit dormant.

Shane laughed and shook his head "No, but I was wondering if you would like to watch the movie with me"

Starr looked to Lillian, watching her interaction with the others quietly

"Hell yeah!" Lilian said, squeezing in as Rey began to wander around the room, humming to herself. "What's the problem?"

Mourn showed Lilian the problem and mused over potential solutions.

Ellie smiled at the idea. "Sure! A movie would be fun!"

Asher gave the two an amused glance, rather flattered that they were so excited about his programming. "I hope you know what you're doing," he said.

Shane chuckled and held out a hand to her "Let's go then"

"Hmm..." Lilian read over the coding, "We don't want to do a complete wipe because then we'll... Well, lose what makes Asher, Asher. What we need to do is get into the system program files and reset or alter the core programming. You seem to be having an administration issue. I recommend something that can bypass firewalls. Do you have anything?"

"Maybe you should try a few things...I sorta either had to learn to cook or risk poisoning due to sister's cooking." He weakly smiled.

Mourn thought about that. "Maybe." He scanned his internal programming, flicking through various files till he found what he was looking for. "safe cracker." He grinned. It wasn't literally a safe cracker, it was a program designed to bust through the security and firewall protocols, usually used for bank raids.

"Man, that doesn't sound good." Matt laughed and awkwardly sat at the foot of the bed, as there wasn't really anywhere else to sit. "My brother cooks, but he's not great at it. He usually forgets to eat anyway." He rolled his eyes. "It's always proven fairly useful not having to cook in order to survive, I may have a restricted diet, but I can live off rats if the need arises. " He shrugged.

"As much as I wish to say ew... Rats if cooked right aren't that bad actually." He shrugged, enjoying the grapes.

Matt laughed. "Finally someone who gets it! Usually everyone recoils and makes ridiculous faces. You know what isn't good? Seagull. Never eat a seagull. "

"Depends on how they are cook and what planet type you have." He chuckled.

Matt chuckled. "Yeah well, the ones i've encountered, totally not worth the effort to catch. How you feeling by the way? More... alive?"
