Upon Vestia: Chapter Eighteen

(Starts on day six at the Guild of Scribes.)

"Freed you, what exactly does that entail?" Hewitt asked curiously.

"They took out the Three Laws from my code," Ethan said, "so I don't have to obey anyone any more."

"The felid yes?" Amity confirmed.

"That cyborg seems to be very efficient with machines." Hewitt mused. "Do you know what happened to him? Did he do all that to himself or..."

"The felid," Ethan confirmed. "He's worryingly good with machines." He shook his head at the professor's question, "During the war with the canid, Mourn was a test subject for the canid cybernetics projects. He was pretty heavily modified and they didn't care much if he lived or not, so he ended up deaf and brain damaged."

"Well that explains an awful lot." The professor shook his head. "The Canid did a great many terrible things during that war."

Amity frowned.

"Oh don't worry, they lost in the end." Hewitt didn't seem overly concerned or sympathetic.

Ethan nodded. "He's happy enough now, anyway. Has his boxes and his pieces of string, and his computers."

Hewitt looked amused. "Boxes." Felid were weird. He went back to his books.

"They're good to nap in, apparently," Ethan said dryly. He went back to his book.

Amity looked from one to the other, hesitating.

Professor Hewitt waved a hand to the drone.
"We can continue the tour later then sir."

"mm hmm." The professor was absorbed in his book now.

Amity smiled to Ethan, and left, turning off his projectors to conserve battery. No point wasting power generating images when there was nobody to see them.

Ethan nodded to Amity, smiling a bit in return. The guy might not be sentient, but at least that meant he wasn't a nuisance.

Tala nodded. "That is most sensible. There are not enough out here who understand the importance of preparing for war." Her ears pricked forward, "How do has your adjustment from the other universe been, young one?"

Sawna nodded and glanced away. Yeah, preparing for war, or running from memories, either way made you physically fit. She met Tala''s eyes again and smiled, shrugging a little "It hasn't been that hard really. Not many are awake at night, so I get to wander without interference and learn all I can."

"Do you grow lonely?" Tala asked curiously. "You are seen so little, it is at times as though you must be on a different ship."

Ellie went to get herself some breakfast, letting Vela stay on her shoulder. She came back and started eating busily. "I sure wonder what those love broadcasts sound like, man."

Sawna shrugged then nodded "At times." She agreed then looked around again "This ship is large enough to get lost on when you want to be alone, but small enough to make the others here your friends."

"You do not hear her?" Starr asked curiously "Oh, do not let her have any sugar." Yeah, 'drunk' baby dragon would not be a good thing, though Vela was curious about this food Ellie had now.

"It is more difficult when it is night," Tala said. "Then there are few people awake. I am pleased it has worked for you." She looked at Sawna in thought, "Are you interested in seeking out sustenance with me?"

"I don't think so," Ellie said, "I'm not telepathic, so should I be able to?"
She kept Vela and her breakfast firmly away from each other.

Sawna gave her a smile then nodded "Sure, I can go eat with you" She said happily enough

Starr shrugged a little "It is not an exact science, but you are not a 'blank' like Asher and Esk are, even if Esk is simply shielding himself. You can be heard..." Hm Starr shook her head and chuckled "This is not something I have studied on much."

Vela stretched out her neck, wanting to sniff the food before almost losing her balance. She caught herself then settled back, resting on Ellie's shoulder again and trying to look like she wasn't interested in the food now.

It didn't take Esk long to paint what he wanted to paint. Satisfied with his work, he headed to the med lab.

Kay stirred in his sleep and opened his eyes, looking around disoriented. He sat up. Where the heck? Oh right, rec room. He blinked a few times, rubbed his aching neck and looked to Asher.

Luka finished her food and put her bowl away. "What happens if they have sugar?" She asked curiously.

Dawn was still in the med lab and still keeping the books up with her air magic. She didn't notice Esk coming in.

"I am not sure why, but sugar is like alcohol to a star dragon" Starr said, looking over to Luka then shrugging a little.

Tala looked pleased. "Do you know of the relocation project for Inari's followers?" She asked.

Ellie giggled and petted Vela's chest with one finger, gently nudging her to stay away from the food. "Maybe it's like the plants, I had to really focus at first to hear them." She tried to focus on listening.

Asher switched out of power saving mode, and smiled at Kay. "Good morning," he said.

Esk paused, watching Dawn for a moment before remarking flatly. "Neat trick."

"Really?" Luka blinked. "That's... pretty weird. What's alchohol like then?"

Kay smiled softly and tried to find his tablet, it had slipped down the side of the sofa. [Morning.] Hmm, he should charge this thing. He frowned, Asher should charge too shouldn't he? [You stayed here all night?]

Asher nodded. "It seemed like as good a place to be as any," he said. "You're feeling a bit better, I hope?"

Sawna shook her head "No, are they here too?" Ok, she had been 'out of the loop' for a while here.

"The babies can only communicate with feelings, not words right now." Starr said to Ellie then looked over to Luka "Most alcohol doesn't affect us, only the strong stuff and that just seems to force us to tap into a...racial emotional pit?" Ok, that was a weird way to say it, but it was fairly accurate. "Right now, it is where all star dragons send their anger at being enslaved, so tapping into it makes us exhibit that anger uncontrollably."

Vella took the opportunity to grab her finger then wrap her neck around her hand a little. She was trying to play with Ellie. She was happy and content and loved and just a little bit hungry, but not enough for her to want to eat again yet.

Dawn jumped, the books falling before she caught them with her power and stacked them on the desk "Esk, hi...um, did you need any help?"

Esk watched her placidly. He shrugged and walked over the desk Kay usually sat at, setting a garishly painted mug down on it that said something in Satare runes.
"So I take it my brother's taking some time off huh?"
He leaned against the desk.

Luka frowned a little. "Wait.. you... have a collective place to store all your anger? That... that doesn't sound overly healthy."

Kay stretched. [I'm not convinced sleeping sitting up is the best thing I can do for my neck but yes, a bit better.] His stomach growled but he ignored it. [Are you alright? ] Man he hoped he hadn't drooled on poor Asher. oops.

Dawn chuckled and eyed the cup before shrugging "A bit, he took off yesterday when they had to go to the library in the city for information and taking care of Danika."

Starr chuckled and shook her head "Well, according to the other universe it is just a place for the queen or king to be able to access all the star dragons, so we can communicate with them anywhere and bolster those that need help. Here it has become a 'storage' type thing to keep from letting the anger at the 'masters' overwhelm them."

"Yeah I heard the news." Esk snickered. "poor kid. Least she's got Starr, so that's one not shit parent. What are you reading?" he asked. Yeah he had nowhere better to be.

Luka shook her head. "I dunno, seems like getting pissed and rebelling against those assholes would be a positive thing to me. Just rolling over and suppressing it? I'd want to make them pay."

"The Followers took refuge in the guild, as Inari's realm has been compromised," Tala said. "They will go insane if Inari dies and so we seek to re home then."

Ellie decided listening to dragon emotions would be just like listening to plant emotions. She went back to focusing on listening to the baby. She tickled the little dragon a bit.
