Upon Vestia: Chapter Twenty-Three

"You have a tablet at least, right?" Asher asked Dawn.

"Sure," Vestia said. "I'll tell Kay, he's the expert on this."

Vestia located Kay. "Your brother's awake, and somewhat coherent. I think Dawn wants some medical advice."

Asher had been staying near Kay because he was loyal that way. He smiled a little, well Esk talking was probably a good sign.

Kay nodded, looking visibly relieved. [Tell her i'm on my way.] He nodded to Asher and headed to the recovery ward.

Esk sighed. "Soon you'll outrank him. Take the damn test already, the most senior medic only being a nurse is embarrassing."

"He's on his way," Vestia told Esk and Dawn.

Asher followed Kay. He wanted to see how Esk was doing, even though he was the second least qualified medic on this ship, and therefore wouldn't actually be useful.

Dawn chuckled at that and nodded, going to her chair to sit and wait, and let her barriers down for a bit. "I will, I wanted to make sure you pulled through first, it would have been a distraction to me to worry about you."

Esk frowned. "Don't start getting sentimental on me Dawn."

Dawn chuckled and looked to him "I would be just as worried for any of my other friends. You have to be focused to pass that test."

"Well at least i'm not a special exception or something." Esk shook his head. "So now i'm not dead, you gonna book it? Then when you pass you can boss the others around, they'll hate it. " He smirked, he liked the idea of Dawn bossing Kay around. Kay was way too used to being in charge of medical matters around here.

Dawn chuckled and shook her head "I booked it already, I just couldn't take it until I knew you were alright. It's the day after tomorrow."

Esk nodded. "And how soon will you know the results?"

It was a long walk okay? Kay slowed down so Asher could actually catch up.

Asher had been doggedly keeping up with Kay's pace as best he could. He was kinda relieved when Kay slowed down. "It's okay, I'm a pro wheelchair racer, remember? I can keep up," he tried to joke.

Kay ducked his head. [Sorry. I'm far too used to being around people who are quicker than I am.] he looked apologetic.

"As soon as they can check the results." Dawn replied and shrugged. "Shouldn't be more than a day or two."

"It's okay, I did win a wheelchair race today, so I'm very fast," Asher said. He sounded amused.

Esk nodded. "Rigel will have to up your pay." He told her. It might have been a joke but his tendency to never smile much or shift out of a flat tone made it really hard to tell if he was just being literal.

Kay nodded. [That is a very good point. We shall never forget your wheelchair racing prowess.] he looked amused.

Dawn smiled and nodded, chuckling softly "Yes, he might have to."

Asher looked smug. "You'd better not. It's my proudest achievement. Beating a wounded organic in a race that was blatantly rigged in my favor. Truly impressive." His smug look broke down, and he subsided into quiet laughter. It was funny, okay?

Kay patted Asher on the shoulder [truely, you are an awe inspiring athlete]

they made it to the shiny big medical center.

Asher smiled at Kay, then schooled his face back into a less humorous expression as they went into the bigger, better med bay. "Hello Esk, Dawn," he greeted them.

"Hello" Dawn said and smiled at them both "Esk wanted to try to use his magic on an animal"

"No, I wanted to know how long I had to sit here doped up on painkillers before you decided to move to stage 2 of this scheme of yours." Esk correctly dully.

Kay nodded to Esk. [I'm glad you're okay.]

"Don't start." Esk snapped.

Kay nodded and picked up the notes so he could read over them. His frown deepened at the report from the surgeon.

Dawn shrugged and looked at Kay, going over to see what he was looking at.

Asher tried to read the notes, but he couldn't when he was this short, so he waited for Kay to be done with them. Kay's frown didn't look like a good sign to him.

Kay handed the notes to Asher.

[How are you feeling?] He asked his brother, reaching for a medical scanner to scan him.

Esk rolled his eyes. "What do you think?"

Kay shook his head. [You have the energy to be rude so I think you're fine.] He read over the scanner details. [I'd suggest taking this slow, build up slowly to make sure everything heals in a controlled manner. ] He handed Dawn the scanner. [Monitor him carefully, if this works, we want a slow controlled regeneration so his system has time to adjust ]

Asher read over the notes carefully. Yikes, Vestia hadn't mentioned how close to death Esk had come. "Should one of us get him one of those goats to start with, and we'll see how that goes?" he asked.

"Do I get any say?" Esk asked flatly.

[Of course.] Kay frowned. [What do you want?]

Esk shrugged.

Kay exhaled deeply. Yeah, figured. He just wanted to be difficult didn't he?

Asher smiled softly at Esk. "If you'd rather not try to accelerate your healing for whatever reason, that's absolutely an option. I shouldn't have assumed to know what you wanted."
He was pretty sure Esk was just being difficult. Esk did that sometimes. "We'll get you a goat, if you don't want it, we can always take it back."

Dawn stood up and headed for the door "I'll go grab one."
