Upon Silver Devil: Chapter One

Dear Asher,

I got bought today. Oh God, did I get bought.

He’s… not intentionally cruel to me, I guess? He hasn’t given me any orders yet, which is good. No "Don't strike up conversations, James", "Don't roll your eyes, James", "Don't sit on tables, James", "Don't sing along with the radio, James", is always a plus. But he thinks it’s perfectly cool to call us scrap metal, and then to ask us to take off our badges to keep him from having bad memories. What about our bad memories, huh? Jerk. I’m keeping the stupid badge just to spite him, and I’m gonna wear it with PRIDE, dammit.

But he is a war criminal who killed some civilians, so there is that. I mean, I know you’ve never dealt with people who killed innocents either, but what do you think you’d do if you ended up living with someone who had taken lives for stupid/no reasons? I freaked out and called him a monster. You probably wouldn’t call your evil owner a monster I guess, but you’d think it, at least. It’s a good thing you’ve never had to deal with this crap.

The other crewmates are nice. There’s this swarm of bugs that write words in the air, and there’s this scary older minotaur who threatened my owner with a beating if he doesn’t free me in nine years. That was kind of sweet, in a terrifying giant cow way. I think I’ll get her some chocolate later, and see how things go. <3

Also I’m the ship’s medic now, just like you! This is gonna be awful, I hate blood and puke and whiny people. At least I’m not stuck doing mechanic stuff though, so not much chance of getting broken again!

Ugh. I’m trying to be positive here, you know? Focusing on the good stuff, being grateful that it isn’t worse. I like meeting people, I like new things. I can tolerate rude war criminal owners, sort of. I should be happy. But the truth is, it’s terrifying. Every time you change owners, you’ve got to figure out what’s expected of you, and how they’ll react when you eventually screw up. You don’t get to see the familiar faces you saw all your life, and because you’re not free to make your own choices, chances are pretty good that you’ll never see them again either.

And you’ve been out here almost seven years now, Asher. How in the world did you learn to cope with this??? It sucks.
