Upon Vestia: Chapter Thirty

Skye nodded and smiled a little "It's a little scary though, when you only see your own kind then see a city with the others."

Ethan found Esk, and looked at him curiously, seeing the startlingly large books he had. Huh, he hadn't figured Esk to be much of a reader. At all.
He hesitated, it felt kind of wrong to interrupt someone when they were pretty clearly studying, but at the same time, he was so curious about this. "Hey," he said awkwardly.

Dawn shook her head and looked to James again "No, I was just putting my things away then came here." She replied. Now she wanted to see it though.

Shane chuckled then shrugged "I've never had a chance to play sports like that. I don't know how I would be at it."

"Tori's been working on the place some more, making it all nice for the star dragons, and of course Kay's been fussing over literally everything he can get his hands on, including the new med bay," James said, "So a lot's happened in there. But you can totally change things, cause you're the only actual doctor on Vestia." He grinned at Dawn.

Dawn chuckled softly and nodded "I will go see it as soon as I can." She said happily.

"We could go see it now if you wanted," James suggested. "We don't have to if you want to stay here, but it's totally an option."

Esk looked up, an annoyed look crossing his face. "weren't you dragged into celebrating?" He asked snidely.

"AHAH! so that might be the secret unknown even to you skill!" Matt declared triumphantly.

Ethan's expression faltered, but then he stood up a little straighter and met Esk's eyes. "Yes I was, and I'm pretty sure you were too. But here we are."

"We could like, take Shane and make him play sports and sing and stuff," Ellie mused. "Find out all his unknown talents."

Esk snorted. "yeah, I was smart enough to say no."

"And I left when I felt like it, because free people can leave parties whenever the fuck they want," Ethan said. He eyed Esk, still curious. "I didn't know you were studying anything." He probably couldn't see the psychology book's title if the book was currently open, but he could recognize a textbook when he saw one.

Dawn smiled and glanced around before nodding "Yeah, let's go see it." She said eagerly.

Shane chuckled and shook his head a little "That's what I said before."

James smiled and got up. "Off to the med bay! I feel kinda funny, visiting med bays just for sightseeing," he mused. "This isn't what I used to be like, I can tell you that much."

"We'll totally, like, give you beer so that you get more imaginative, and then we'll test out projects on you until you manifest new skills!" Ellie told Shane. "Right, Matt?"

Dawn chuckled and shrugged a little "People change over time, what they like and don't like. At least on some things." She said as she stood and set her plate to be cleaned up.

Shane laughed and shook his head a little "I think the holodeck would be best for such experiments."

"I like this idea! " Matt agreed.

Esk shrugged. "people keep coming to me with their stupid shitty problems, I figured I may as well find a way to get paid for it." It was more than that of course, Esk had a pathological need to be useful, and adding another string to his bow made him more useful to those around him. If he was useful, if he had a purpose, they were less likely to get rid of him.

"I guess you're right," James said. "It's weird though, so weird." He waited for her to take up her plate, then headed out with her. "It's a good thing we change though, even if it means we tour med bays for fun."

"Time to haul Shane to the holodeck and experiment on him?" Ellie cackled in a way that might have been threatening, had she been taller and not dressed in sparkly sneakers.

Ethan considered that. "You want to be a shrink? Here on Vestia?" Damn, that was actually a good business strategy.

"Yes! to the holodeck!" Matt cheered.

Esk shrugged again. "maybe. There's the very real chance dealing with all these people's crap might become so annoying I shoot myself in the face just to shut them all up." He slammed the book shut. "But shit this stuff is boring to read."

Ethan snickered. "You might not get many customers if you tell them that, I don't think people like being told that their problems are boring." He looked at the book, "That book does look like it's pretty dry."

"most people's problems ARE boring, or stupid, or really easily fixable if they just took a moment to stop being a prick." Esk reasoned. He shook his head. Yeah he didn't understand why people came to him for advice either, he usually just told them they were dicks and to get over themselves didn't he?

"Whatever works for you, I guess," Ethan said. "Maybe some people around here will actually pay you to tell them to get over themselves, who knows." He wouldn't, he kind of wanted to start seeing a therapist again at some point, but Esk just seemed like the wrong choice on so many levels. Oh well.

"Hey, if i'm getting paid, it can't be any worse than any of the other jobs i've had." Esk shook his head and rose from his seat.

Ethan nodded. "True enough. You start threatening to shoot yourself, and I'm going to make Vestia drag you to a therapist though," he said.

Dawn chuckled and shrugged "Well, it's not just for fun but to see what he's done to my med bay" She said, teasing a little now.

Shane raised an eyebrow at Ellie's laugh. That was an odd laugh. "Now?" He asked softly.

"Ah, true," James said with a laugh. "We gotta see what damage has been done, fix it all up. Maybe do what the other medics do, and put up some signs."

"Sure, why not? Now's a great time to test you!" Ellie said. "The party's winding down, anyway, right?"

Dawn chuckled and nodded, going to the elevator to go up to the right floor.

Shane chuckled and glanced around then nodded "I guess so."

James walked with Dawn. Before long, they reached the other med bay.
James got the door for her, holding it open for her to go in, in a way that was probably intended to seem chivalrous.

Dawn smiled at him as she went in and looked around the room curiously. "Thank you James."

James grinned and followed her in. "Now anyone would mistake me for a gentleman."
The room was nicely organized and unpacked by now. The shelves were neat, the lights were bright but not painfully so. Somebody, probably Tori, had put up some cheerful artwork, as well as a small bin of toys for any younger patients to play with.

"This is wonderful." Dawn said as she looked around. "And you can be a gentleman, when you want to be."
