Upon Vestia: Chapter Sixteen

"All those aliens, always hyping up how great they are, and it always turns out to be a lie," James said sagely. "I'm not like that though, I mean I've been known to punch minotaurs. I'd be a proper villain, I wouldn't lose."
He watched as the guy went back into the train, "Ooooh nooooo. They so should not have done that. It is ON!"

Ethan nodded. "Some of those books do that. Reasons why it's a good idea to read near a computer, so you can research any especially bizarre references." He smiled unnaturally at Esk, "I don't recommend reading books that require a lot of research just for fun, but they have their uses."

Dawn nodded again and shrugged "Yeah, that one may take some time, I have to read more about that time period of Earth before trying to read the book again."

Esk shrugged, in his opinion that was more than enough reason not to read.

Ethan looked amused. "Or you can just avoid that book and others like it," he suggested. "Plenty of stuff here which doesn't make as many obscure references."

Dawn chuckled a little and nodded "Yeah, but now I kind of want to know more about it." she said then shrugged "Not a leisure day book though." She handed him that one and chuckled again "Maybe after I learn more of the history, I can come back to that one,for now, I guess I will try these two"

"you really must be bored." Esk told Dawn flatly. Willing to research ancient alien history just so you could read another book? man, that was a serious time sink.

Ethan took the book and set it down on the desk. He'd shelve it again later, he was kind of curious to flip through it. "Sounds good," he told Dawn, "Hope these books are less baffling." He looked at Esk, "Or she's curious." He shrugged, he read a lot of stuff just out of curiosity. And also to keep Kaylr out of his head. But mostly curiosity.

Dawn chuckled softly and looked to Esk "I am giving myself a day off from medical research, but this butterfly thing is keeping us inside and unable to go to the school to learn more air magic, so I wanted to read something else." She didn't really know what else to do with herself

"This butterfly thing is stupid." Esk remarked. "How'd they lose a butterfly in the first damn place? and why do they even have one? None of it makes sense." He rolled his eyes. The guild didn't make much sense in any way to him. He glanced to Ethan and shrugged again. "Bored. People read for only really two reasons. Nothing better to do, or they want something that makes them look busy so people don't annoy them." He smirked. "the second one doesn't work that well, you just get asked 'what are you reading?', but at least you have a book to hit someone with if they don't go away right?"

Ethan snorted. "People lose things. Usually not butterflies, but sometimes things vanish. Still, you'd think they would keep better track of this thing, since it's no doubt rare and valuable." Then again, he'd accidentally let Sara escape once. These things did happen.
He looked amused. "It's a way to learn shit. Being able to ignore people is just an extra bonus."

Esk shrugged. "I always found it easier to learn by just doing it. "

"Works better for some fields of knowledge than others," Ethan said. He noticed something on his computer monitor and irritably clicked his mouse at it. "I prefer second hand knowledge. Less unpleasant experience."

Esk snickered darkly. "Don't start reading the memoirs then, that shit's depressing as all hell." He nodded to the computer "Have fun setting things up again, don't fry the board again."

Dawn shook her head and looked to Esk "I would end up killing a lit of people if I tried to learn to be a medic with only on hand experience and no reading."

Ethan snorted. "When did you read enough memoirs to get an opinion on them?" He looked mildly impatient, "I didn't try to fry it."

Esk shrugged to Dawn. "There's always the holodeck, i'm sure that's got training programs somewhere. Then again, i'm not a medic. I know only enough to stop myself bleeding to death." He wriggled his fingers. "I'd make the worst doctor right?" He snorted and ignored Ethan's annoyance.

Dawn thought about that before nodding "That could work" Now there was something to check out and see if there were any programs on...they might need a second one for others though.

"Sounds like a good way to practice without making a mess and killing people anyway." Esk sounded dismissive. "More useful than going flying or sightseeing anyway."

"Just make a pretend mess and kill pretend people" Dawn said and shook her head, yeah pretend people and a mess that went away when the program ended. Fun.

Esk snickered. "All the mess, no guilt... or jailtime." He smirked at her.

Dawn chuckled and shook her head, looking to him with a smile before turning for the door "Yeah, but first thing is to check if the program is installed, or if it's something we need to get when it's safe to go outside again"

Esk glanced back at Ethan, then shrugged and headed for the hall. "Seems to have everything else." He reasoned.

Ethan glanced up to nod at them as they left, then went back to his computer restoration project. He'd be busy for a long time.

Dawn shrugged "True, but surgery is a specialization, as are some other medical sciences. I haven't looked before" She would head to her room first to drop off the books then go to the holodeck to check it out

"Given the chaos of our situation, learning at least some surgical shit seems like it'd be helpful." Esk reasoned sensibly, walking with her.

Dawn nodded again, with the battle they were planning on going into, there could very easily be call for advanced medical skills, if they survived and stayed free...
She reached the holodeck and started looking through the programs available. "Even if such skills aren't needed (They did have a lot of self healers after all) it is still good to know and have it."

Esk nodded. "Well James is scared of blood, my brother has an annoying habit of getting himself hurt so that leaves Asher and you as actual medical professionals." He snorted at the word professional. "Pretty sad state when you realise the highest ranking medic on the ship isn't even a doctor either. " He leaned against a wall while she scrolled through programs. "Sorry to say it Dawn, but we kinda need you to know this stuff. Well, those guys do. There's only so much Sawna can heal up."
