Upon Vestia: Chapter Twenty-Eight

"Cause Esk is lazy and he wants someone to wait on Dawn, even though he has a massive crush on her and could wait on her himself," James grumbled. "At least that's what I assume was his motivation," he amended. "Your brother is weird. So Dawn's probably okay and not infected, that's good at least."

"you... seem in.. g... good spirits despite it..." Ivor observed warily.

[Perhaps it would be best to let him rest, he must be exhausted. ] Kay reasoned. Vestia would tell them if they were needed right? He chewed his lip, trying not to worry. He went to go get a shower and get ready for the day. He should be presentable when this doctor turned up.

Ethan frowned a little. "Of course, not all of us have emotions that can be sensed." He was pretty sure Starr wouldn't let any dragon hurt a crew member, but still. Fun things to worry about.

"The alcohol was pleasing, and there were minotaurs," Tala said. "There is much to be glad for, and a headache shall not change that." There had only been one minotaur, but she could exaggerate a bit.

"Yeah, that's probably the best option," Asher agreed. He smiled softly at Kay, then set to work getting himself into the wheelchair.

Yours may not be able to be sensed, but you still have emotions. The crew is also under my protection, something all my people know." Starr assured him.

Shane chuckled lightly at that then shrugged. "You had fun, that's good."

"All right. That's good." Ethan shook his head. "It's too easy to remember people like Merith and Shock, who were assholes because they knew they were powerful enough to get away with it. Or those guards in this other universe. I guess you never had to worry about that, you had guards of your own over there, and of course you can create stars, but not all of us are quite that lucky." He smiled his weird smile.

Starr dipped her head in a nod. "It is easy to remember those who abuse their power, but there are those who only use their power to help others or protect those who cannot keep themselves safe."

"Once bitten, twice shy, I think the saying is," Ethan said. "Thank God not all powerful beings are so sadistic." He looked to Starr's egg curiously, "So are the other dragons keeping their eggs too, or are they making other arrangements?" He couldn't imagine all the dragons would want to keep their babies, seemed like a grim reminder of their captivity, and they might feel better about letting another dragon adopt. Then again, maybe a telepathic species had a different outlook on the situation.

Starr nodded then looked to her egg. "The young ones are not to blame for what was done to us. They are not the ones to blame. Half those with eggs here were adopted, not born to the ones raising them. They are our future after all."

Tala snorted happily. "It is good to be on a busy planet like this." She looked to Silence and Ivor, "What did you do last night?"

Asher got himself in the wheelchair, and his multitude of useful things in his pockets, and headed to the med bay to check and make sure everything was in order there.

Ethan smiled a bit. "That many were adopted? That's nice. So some couples--are there couples?--just decided they wanted to raise a kid or two?"

"Old people. Answer questions." Silence told Tala.

Ivor said nothing. He just sort of cringed.

"Brother stay." Silence told Tala. "better with fewer people."

"l.. less minds... talking... " Ivor mumbled.

Kay would shower and get dressed before going to get coffee and breakfast.

"Ah, you went with Shane to the trivial event?" Tala asked Silence. She nodded to Ivor, "I am sure the old have most bothersome thoughts. You were wise to avoid their gathering places."
Her mind was thankfully pretty quiet, she had reasonably good mental shields even with a hangover, so mostly all a telepath would hear right now would be emotions and maybe the occasional word.

"The couples are those who would be together anyway, but yes, they were more likely to adopt a child or two than a single, though singles did adopt some, or were the parents of them." Starr replied.

Shane nodded and smiled "It was an interesting event, I learned some trivia from it."

"I see." Ethan shook his head, "Not sure how you'd fall in love while you're a prisoner. Seems like a terrible idea when you're just going to get sold before long." Of course, Ethan had never really been around other slaves so he wasn't entirely clear on how they interacted, and he didn't fully understand how people fell in love anyway. Which made the dragon situation harder to understand for him.

"Some were couples before" Starr said with a sad smile. "They held on for one another, some have a partner still in captivity in other places."

"That's... A long time to wait," Ethan said. "I guess they had nothing better to do, but that's got to be depressing as hell." He shook his head. "I guess I should let you go back to, you know, ruling your people."
