Carpathians

Carpathians can only produce children with one another. They have a low fertility rate, so each child is precious. Carpathians generally stay in the gender they are born to, but do not have to when shifted to another creature.

Carpathians can take any form they have seen and studied a little. This includes becoming mist in a cloud, animals, plants, or alien creatures.

Carpathian are the Prime universe's vampires. They must drink blood from a warm blooded creature to survive, though they can enter the mind of their victim to calm them and make them forget they were attacked. This does not include 'mind control'. The blood loss is usually enough to weaken the mind enough for a nudge from the carpathian to think they drank too much or got sick to explain the weak feeling.

Carpathians try not to kill while feeding. They believe it is abhorrent to kill while feeding. They can and do kill otherwise. Those that kill while feeding (once past the learning stage) are hunted down by their brethren. The killer must either pay the family of the victim, or be killed themselves.

Sunlight weakens Carpathians, they are a lunar creation. They live in the dark, using dark clouds when they must move in daylight. This effect is not lessened in space, they must be on the interior of a ship and away from windows or the windows covered or they could get so weak that they go into a catatonic state. Too long in that state and they cannot be recovered.

They sleep best when in the earth of their home world. That earth has healing properties in the dirt itself. When they are away from their home world, they use crystals around their sleeping area to stay balanced and sane. If they have the energy to, they can make any dirt similar to their home world's dirt.

On their home world of Carpathia, they live in caves that connect to the planet's core, the original source of their magic.

They believe they were created to be the planet's keepers, making sure the earth and animals lived to the best of their ability

They can survive a few days without eating, but this makes them weak, so they try to eat at least once a day.

They can heal, but as with all their magic types, it takes energy that must be replenished either with blood or with deep rest.

They can create clouds and speak to animals. They can move the earth, wind, fire or water on a whim. They can help plants grow or renew the nutrients in dirt to make it rich loam.

There is a subset among the Carpathians that delight in killing their prey for the rush of feelings they get. They feed on the fear they can easily cause. The Carpathians call this group Vampires. The two groups fight one another, the Vampires consistently trying to make Carpathians join their side while the Carpathians try to capture or kill the Vampires.

When a Carpathian becomes a Vampire, their teeth start taking on the stains of blood and their bodies seem to age faster than normal, a physical show that they are not acting according to their nature. They must consistently keep up an illusion or rely on traps to not frighten their prey before they have a chance to feed.
