Good Cop Bad Cop: Chapter One

One week. Asher has to be mean, Kay has to be nice. Whoever gives up first has to write a story for the winner. Should be... interesting.

Kay looked skeptical. [It's hard to believe you're really that mean when you grin so foolishly.] He smirked. Truth be told, he found Asher's goofy grin extremely adorable but that was because it was such a pure expression of the sort of person he was.

Asher attempted to look serious. "I can't help it if my face is friendly. Now I'm sad because you don't believe i can be mean." He didn't look sad though.

Kay couldn't help but laugh silently at Asher's pathetic attempt at sorrow. [furrow your brow a little, narrow your eyes. glare as if someone just called you something awful and misplaced the only wrench on the ship]

Asher tried to follow Kay's instructions. He really did! But Kay's amusement was infectious and he ended up smiling sheepishly. "This is going to take some practice."

Kay nodded, clearly very amused. [It takes a lot of practice. My mother was an expert at the LOOK, the tiniest movement of her face and suddenly her eyes were full of murder. Esk does the same thing, it's uncanny.] He shook his head, oblivious to his own knack for the same thing.

"You have a pretty scary glare too," Asher told Kay. "I think it makes Ellie nervous." It didn't make him nervous though, maybe because Kay barely ever aimed that look at him. Or maybe because that look was part of Kay's charm. Ahem. "With practice, I'm sure I can be scarier than you." He tried again. It almost worked. Sort of.

Kay started laughing again. [Why thank you, i've had many years to practice my glare.] He looked at Asher's glare and tilted his head. He looked like Ethan, it was wrong. [can't have you overshadowing me though can we? ] He smiled.

"Well how can I win this if I don't have a withering glare?" Asher said."I don't want to steal your signature look, but I can't just be friendly or I lose automatically."

Kay smirked. [And I look forward to watching you lose]

Asher narrowed his eyes. "Well I look forward to disappointing you." He wandered around the desk to see what he could confiscate. "You're the good cop now, aren't you supposed to believe in my abilities?"

Kay looked aghast [You're right! Go Asher, you can do it!] He looked half hearted and snatched the pens away before Asher could take them, putting them into a drawer for safe keeping [In case you decide to throw them at someone]

Asher had a silent for of giggles at Kay's attempt at being supportive. "Nice save, Good Cop." He coughed, "I mean, of course I can. You don't need to tell me." He sighed as Kay confiscated the pens, "I needed those."

Kay smiled and handed him a single pen before closing the drawer. [there you go.]

"One pen?" Asher managed a semi-believable look of outrage, "One pen?" He took the pen and stuck it in his shirt pocket, "Unbelievable."

Kay smiled serenely back at him. [Now what on earth do you want multiple pens for?]

"To throw at dumb people," Asher said. That was a complete lie of course, he didn't like doing things that might accidentally hurt people, and he didn't like making a mess. It sounded good though. Mostly he just was just causing mild inconveniences for the sake of it.

Kay continued to smile serenely. [Oh Asher, you know I can't allow you to throw things at people, it would be utterly unprofessional.] Oh he was enjoying this way too much.

Asher made a face. "True." He shook his head and took out his lone pen, finding some sticky notes and writing, [Dumb people will be glared at and subjected to withheld painkillers. So stop being dumb.

He stuck that to the door.

Kay looked at the note, then at Asher and started silent laughing again.

At which point Esk poked his head into the medical bay. "You're both having far too much fun for people who are supposed to be working." He remarked dryly.

Kay was trying very... very hard to stop laughing.

"Matt was right, you ARE acting weird"

Kay composed himself. [What has Matt been telling you? ]

"Just that you're being weird and he's creeped out. I figured i'd come see for myself if it was just for his benefit or if you really have finally snapped."

Kay tried to keep his expression neutral and not glare instinctively at his brother.

Asher forced the smile off his face with difficulty; Kay's amusement always got him, darn it. After a moment he frowned at Esk, in a fairly convincing manner. "Oh good, you're not here because you did something stupid. Well that's a first on this ship, isn't it?" He snorted.

"I don't tend to do stupid things." Esk replied cooly. Except punch James that one time... which was dumb, but hey, he wasn't gonna bring it up. He eyed Asher suspiciously.

[How can we help you little brother?] Kay asked, forcing a smile.

Esk looked from one to the other and back again. "You're up to something... "

[Now whatever makes you say that?} Kay feigned ignorance.

"You're trying to be nice, but you have this twitch just above your right eye that tells me you're really forcing it." Esk looked to Asher. "And he's trying not to smile, far more convincingly. " He shrugged. "Androids are a lot harder to read, less subconscious tells."

Damnit Esk. Kay bit down on his lip and wrote [You always were painfully perceptive. We decided it was time for a change.]

"you two have cracked." Esk remarked flatly.

"You have to admit, it's fun to watch him try to be nice," Asher said, looking at Kay. "Obviously it's quite a struggle for him. Plenty of amusement value." He nodded.

Kay very nearly scowled at Asher but caught himself just in time.

Esk smirked.

[And Asher here is really struggling to be mean, poor thing. He's trying very hard, I think we should commend his attempt at least. ] He smiled a sickening smile at Asher.

"You two are weird.. and gross." Esk told them. "But it's screwing with Matt's head so... keep it up I guess." He shrugged and left them to it. wierdos

Asher managed a pretty good glare at that. Hey, his attempt at being mean was pretty good, thank you very much! He deserved more than condescending praise. Humph.
"You're pretty gross yourself," he said to Esk as he left, "A bit hypocritical, are you?"

Esk snickered.

Kay tried to look serious, man, Asher was getting GOOD at this. Drat. [I think he's getting calmer... interesting. Poor Matt, maybe we should explain] Kay tried not to start laughing again. This game was ridiculous, this whole bet was ridiculous. But right now watching Asher flounder for insults was rather a lot of fun. [That is a very good glare.]

Asher tried hard to not laugh. He felt like he was doing something daring and forbidden by calling people gross, even though he knew it wasn't at all. And because he knew it was actually pretty tame, he felt like a dumb five year old. But man, was it fun!
"Maybe you should explain, you're the nice one," he said, barely keeping his face straight, "And I'm glad I'm making progress with my glares."

[They aren't quite as cute as your grins though.] Kay told him, nodding. [I'll speak to Matt later, unless you think I should go now?] Oo cunning, an attempt to get out of being nice for a few minutes. He feigned concern. [Wouldn't want him fretting about us as well as Thalia right? He has enough to worry about.] He smirked
